THE DAY ONE STORY

I’m Rachel Hampsey. What you need to know first is that my wedding day was perfect. Except for all of the parts that weren’t.

Like… we couldn’t afford to upgrade the chairs, and I never got a slice of cake, and my dress had ripped during portraits. My anxiety about those things could have spiraled, but my new husband took my hands and said something that changed our lives. “This is just day one,” Jack told me.

Picture us on day seven: Sitting on the floor at LAX, trying to catch an earlier flight home from what was supposed to be our honeymoon. Some curveballs were thrown our way and best laid plans for our life together seemed to be slipping away by the minute. The little things I had been worrying about a week prior started to seem insignificant.

That was when I remembered this polaroid photo in my bag. I had been carrying it with us all week; our photographer took it on our wedding day and gave it to us to keep. I dug around for a pen, looked at Jack, and wrote two words in the white space: “day one.”

Somewhere around day 45 is when the idea for Day One with capital letters came to me. As newlyweds, we faced all kinds of days, few of which felt like the honeymoon phase we expected. But remembering the WHY of our day one gave us unexplainable strength and grace to adapt our plans, embrace the unknown, and cooperate as a team of equals.

What if couples embraced that mindset even before day one? What if they approached wedding planning as practice for being married? That sounds powerful enough to change the narrative to me - will you join us?

  • Rachel Hampsey

    OWNER & PRINCIPAL PLANNER

I love a list: enneagram 4, INFP, pisces, former theatre kid (duh lol)

Hobbies: reading, going for walks with my husband, rearranging my furniture, and painting my feelings

What to expect from me: exclamation points, an unreliable accent, active listening, lots of tangents (I could discuss Avatar: The Last Airbender at great length!!) Oh, and I will be dancing while I clean up your wedding reception.

Special skills: knowing what brands were used to dress TV & film sets, hanging art straight without a measure or a level, and saying the alphabet backward. I will only prove the last one if you are stressed on your wedding day and in need of a distraction.

  • Erin Cahalan, Day One Coordinator

    Erin Cahalan

    COORDINATOR

That is her natural hair color, and what’s crazy is it’s nowhere near the most interesting thing about Erin.

Our girl is frog and toad coded, a book club enthusiast and maker of trinkets and doodads. She is an expert in thrifting and Twilight.

Her alternate job titles include Agnes’s mom, head barista at Brother Andre’s Cafe, and Day One hype-woman.

Exceptionally kind, unfairly witty, with a keen eye for beautiful things. You’re gonna love her - we do.

  • Bey Hampsey

    CFO (CHIEF FELINE OFFICER)

I may as well introduce her now, as she will likely join us for every single virtual meeting.

(Yes, I’ve tried closing the door to my office. No, it only makes it worse. She likes to be included and will protest.)
